FAQ

1. What is toupee?

A toupee is a hairpiece mainly designed for men, also known as hair replacement systems, hair systems, partial wigs and half-wigs. It can cover the areas of hair loss or balding caused by male pattern baldness, usually on the top and front of the head.

Men's toupees blend with the remaining natural hair on the sides and back of the wearer's head, creating a natural and realistic look.

We offer a great collection of human hair toupees in different bases, sizes, textures, colors and more that can help cover up thinning hair or bald spots on your crown.

2. Differences between toupee & wig?

Toupees are worn primarily by men because they cover the main areas of hair loss caused by male pattern baldness (the top and front of the scalp). Women's wigs cover the entire scalp, and since women usually have longer hair, they wear wigs at a higher rate. That being said, both genders can wear toupees and wigs, especially for men who want longer hair or simply don't have hair to blend in with a toupee, they can opt for a full-cap wig.

Another difference is that you absolutely need clips, tape, or liquid adhesive to secure a toupee. Wigs can also be secured in these ways, but are usually simply worn like a hat without the use of adhesives as they are securely fastened to the wearer's scalp.

3. How to buy a toupee that suits you best?

To purchase the perfect human hair system for men, there are a few steps you need to follow:

1. Choose the right cap size - measure your area of hair loss so you know what hair system size works best for you to get the perfect fit.

2. Choose the right base type - some bases will require more maintenance while others may not be suitable for your climate. Some base types are also more expensive than others so check that they are within your budget over the course of a year.

3. Select the right hair color - selecting a hair color that doesn’t match with your natural hair will result in an unnatural appearance.

4. Pick the right hair density - you will need to add a suitable amount of hair density that not only blends with your current hair density, but is also age-appropriate. Too much can look unnatural!

4. How long do toupees last?

The lifespan of toupees depend on the type of base and how it is fastened. Thin skin systems are disposable and usually last 4-6 weeks, but with proper care they can last longer. Monofilament systems last longer, with some lasting six months or more.

For more information about bases and their qualities, you can refer to the following:

Monofilament system: durable, comfortable and breathable.

Thin skin hair system: comfortable, invisible, unnoticeable, natural hairline.

Lace hair system: comfortable, breathable, invisible, unnoticeable, natural hairline.

5. Can toupees fall off?

Toupees will not fall off if they have been fastened correctly.

If you are thorough and careful during application, use the correct type of adhesive, and make sure you do not get the system wet for at least 24 hours after your first installation, it should remain fully secure.

If so, you won’t need to worry about your toupee falling off, and you won’t even be able to force it off either. The only way to remove it cleanly and painlessly is to use an adhesive remover to slowly peel it off.

6. Can I shower with a toupee?

You can certainly shower with a wig on.

Having said that, there are some precautions you need to take.

First, you need to make sure you avoid getting the system wet within 24 hours of installation.

This allows the adhesive to fully cure, keeping the system firmly in place on your scalp.

You should also avoid using extremely hot water and shampoos and conditioners that contain sulfates and parabens.

7. Can I sleep with a toupee on?

You can certainly sleep with your toupee on!

However, to prolong the life of your toupee system, you should follow steps such as using a silk or satin pillowcase and making sure the system doesn't get wet.

8. Can I swim with a toupee?

Regardless of system type, swimming should be no problem.

Although we do not recommend swimming with a thin skin system as hair may fall out.

But as long as you don't expose your system to chlorine for an extended period of time, it should generally be fine.

If you plan to swim for a long time, we recommend wearing a swimming cap.

If you've just installed your system, you should also make sure you don't get it wet for at least 24 hours to allow the tape or liquid adhesive to fully cure.

9. Are toupees itchy?

Generally speaking, toupees do not cause itchiness and if installed correctly you should not experience any problems.

That being said, everyone’s skin is different and reacts differently.

For example, a polydermal system may be comfortable for you but cause irritation to others.

Additionally, you may experience itchiness, but not because of the toupee, but due to other factors such as:

lack of maintenance

skin condition

dye hair

allergic reaction to adhesive

Here are some tips to prevent itching or skin irritation:

Maintain your hair system properly.

Clean your scalp regularly.

Use high quality hair system.

Test hair care products before use to avoid skin irritation.

Use a special shampoo if you are dealing with a pre-existing skin condition or dandruff.

10. How often does a toupee need to be replaced?

Although we have estimates of the lifespan of our systems, they may last longer if well maintained.

Therefore, how often you need to replace your toupee depends on a variety of factors.

If you are losing more hair and notice bald spots or spots on your toupee, this is the first major sign that it may be time to replace your system.

Deciding whether it's time for a new system also depends on deteriorating hair quality and fading color.

11. Why is the hair on my system shedding/fading/drying?

There are many factors that can cause hair to fall out, fade, or become dry and brittle.

Aside from daily wear and tear, a major reason is the type of shampoo or conditioner you use and the ingredients in their formulas.

It's important to make sure you're using products specifically designed for wigs, and at least ones that don't contain sulfates, parabens, or other harmful ingredients.

The wrong shampoo or conditioner can cause problems such as fading, excessive shedding, stripping your hair of its protective oil layer, and causing frizzy hair.

12. How to remove glue residue from toupee hair?

If you are using liquid adhesive as your method of attachment, it is completely normal to see glue residue on the hair and system base. To get rid of it you need to do the following:

1. Apply and wipe the adhesive solvent over the area of glue residue and let it sit for a few minutes.

2. Use a fine tooth comb to gently comb your hair toward the hairline. It can collect large amounts of glue residue. You can also use a plastic card, such as an old credit card.

3. Remove the residue with paper towels and continue combing until most of the residue is removed.

4. Wipe and cleanse the hair and base with a cloth, then wash with shampoo and conditioner.

13. How often should maintain a hair system?

In general, we recommend removing your hair system for maintenance at least every two weeks, especially if you wear a thin-skin system.

For lace and monofilament systems, maintenance can be performed every four weeks.

14. Will wearing a toupee affect my scalp?

As long as you properly secure, remove, and maintain your men's hair system, your scalp should not be harmed.

That being said, we recommend performing a skin patch test before using any tape or liquid adhesive to attach a hair system for the first time.

This will help gauge whether your scalp can handle it.

15. Does it hurt to remove a toupee?

If you use the appropriate adhesive solvent or remover, you should be able to painlessly and smoothly remove the system from your scalp.

Forcibly removing it without solvent will not only be painful and injurious to the scalp, but may also damage the base of the system.
